my ipod thumb is sore

Last night I had the privledge of seeing Fruit Bats play at the Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City. After several years of listening to them I had never actually seen them live, so it was quite a treat to finally do so!

Eric Johnson’s energy blew me away. His voice is so powerful and clear, and he absolutely rocks the guitar. Listening to their albums  does nothing to convey how strong this band can jam.

Another fun element of the show was the fact that almost every single song was played with a new twist. There were several songs which I, though I knew them well,  didn’t recognize until the vocals came in. Some songs (“Canyon Girl”, etc.) sounded almost like completely different songs entirely. It was a blast getting to hear old favorites played in a way I’d never heard before. And luckily they did play a great mix of older tunes as well as several tracks from The Ruminant Band (and the best tracks from it in my opinion.

I can’t believe how many years it has taken me to see Fruit Bats play, but it was definitely worth the wait. I’m super glad they decided to stop in Salt Lake City, and can only hope they come back quickly!
